Buchlov Castle rises from a wooded hill in the Slovácko region of Moravia, roughly 235 kilometres south-east of Prague and close to the town of Uherské Hradiště. It occupies one of the most commanding natural positions in south-eastern Moravia, with views from its tower stretching on clear days all the way to the White Carpathians on the Slovak border. The castle is not especially well known outside the Czech Republic, but among historians of medieval military architecture it holds a particular distinction: it is the best-preserved Gothic fortress in Moravia and one of the most authentically medieval castles in the entire country, having never been substantially demolished or rebuilt in a later architectural style.
The earliest documented construction dates to around 1240, when the castle was founded by King Přemysl I to guard the so-called Amber Road — an ancient trading route connecting the Baltic coast to the Adriatic across the Moravian lowlands. The strategic position ensured that whoever held Buchlov controlled movement through the pass below. Over subsequent centuries the castle passed through a succession of noble families. The Berchtold family owned it for a substantial portion of its later history and contributed to the collections of furniture, armour, and hunting trophies that visitors see today. Unlike many comparable fortresses that were converted into Renaissance or Baroque residences, Buchlov retained its Gothic character through each period of ownership, which is why the original chapel, round tower, and defensive walls remain largely in their 13th-century form.
The region around Buchlov is part of Slovácko, the folk-culture heartland of Moravia. This area was recognised by UNESCO in 2023 as part of the intangible cultural heritage for its living traditions of folk music, dress, and the Ride of the Kings ceremony. The castle sits at the junction of the Slovácko ethnographic region and the Chřiby hills, a small but remarkably biodiverse forested ridge. Two kilometres below the castle hill stands Buchlovice Chateau, a Baroque summer residence built in the early 18th century, surrounded by a formal French garden. The visual and architectural contrast between the Gothic hilltop fortress and the elegant Baroque chateau below makes a combined visit one of the most satisfying in Moravia.
Reaching Buchlov requires a 20-minute uphill walk from the car park at the base of the hill, or along a marked hiking trail from Buchlovice village. The ascent is not demanding but calls for appropriate footwear. The castle is open from April through October and operates guided tours only, with the last tour departing one hour before closing. A combination ticket covering both Buchlov Castle and Buchlovice Chateau is available at the ticket desk and represents good value for those spending a full day in the area.
