Sychrov Castle sits in a gentle valley in the Liberec region of northern Bohemia, ninety kilometres northeast of Prague, on the edge of the landscape that Czechs call Bohemian Paradise — Český ráj. The castle's silhouette is immediately distinctive: brick-red Neo-Gothic towers and pointed turrets rise above a French Romantic landscape park, evoking the châteaux of the Loire Valley rather than the stern stone fortresses typical of Bohemia. The park, with its winding paths, ponds, and carefully arranged groupings of mature trees, is considered one of the finest examples of English Romantic landscape design in the Czech Republic and is open year-round free of charge.

The estate has medieval origins, but the building visitors see today is almost entirely a 19th-century creation. After the castle came into the possession of the French Rohan family in 1820, Prince Karl Alain de Rohan initiated a sweeping Neo-Gothic reconstruction that continued in phases through the 1860s. The Rohans were one of the most distinguished aristocratic families in France — their motto, "Roi ne puis, prince ne daigne, Rohan je suis" ("King I cannot be, prince I deign not to be, Rohan I am"), captures the extraordinary self-regard of a dynasty that traced its lineage to Breton royalty. Having fled Revolutionary France, the family rebuilt their identity in Bohemia, and Sychrov became their primary seat, filled with the portraits, furnishings, and memorabilia that documented their history.

The most celebrated item in the Sychrov collection is also the most personal: a portrait gallery containing 192 paintings of Rohan family members, spanning several generations and constituting the largest assemblage of Rohan family portraits anywhere in the world. The paintings are arranged by lineage across the state rooms, creating an unusual experience — a guided tour through not just an architectural interior but an entire aristocratic genealogy rendered in oil. Sychrov also carries a musical association: Antonín Dvořák, the Czech composer, was a frequent visitor to the Bohemian Paradise region, and the castle and its landscape are linked to the period of his life when he composed some of his most celebrated chamber music.

The castle's most practical advantage is its rail connection — Sychrov station stands directly opposite the castle entrance, making it the most easily accessible major chateau from Prague without a car. The direct train from Praha hlavní nádraží towards Liberec stops at Sychrov in around 80 minutes, and the park begins immediately on the other side of the tracks. This combination of easy access, a distinctive architectural style, an extraordinary portrait collection, and proximity to the Bohemian Paradise hiking area makes Sychrov one of the most rewarding and undervisited castle destinations within comfortable range of the capital.

What is the connection between Sychrov Castle and Dvořák?
Antonín Dvořák, the Czech composer best known for his New World Symphony, had a strong affinity for the Bohemian Paradise region, which lies immediately east of Sychrov. He was a regular visitor to the area and is associated with the natural landscapes around the castle — the wooded hills, rock formations, and quiet valleys of what is now Český ráj. The region and its character are reflected in several of his chamber works composed during the periods he spent here. Sychrov itself is cited in the context of Dvořák's time in the region, and the association adds a musical dimension to what is already a culturally rich visit.
Who were the Rohan family and why did they settle at Sychrov?
The Rohans were one of the most powerful noble families in France, claiming descent from the ancient kings of Brittany. Their famous motto — "King I cannot be, prince I deign not to be, Rohan I am" — captures their exceptional sense of dynastic pride. When the French Revolution swept away the old aristocratic order, many noble families fled France. The Rohans acquired the Sychrov estate in 1820, and Prince Karl Alain de Rohan embarked on an ambitious Neo-Gothic rebuilding of the castle, transforming it into a statement of dynastic identity in their new homeland. They filled the castle with 192 family portraits, furnishings, and memorabilia, creating one of the most personal aristocratic interiors in Bohemia.
What is there to do near Sychrov Castle?
Sychrov sits on the western edge of Bohemian Paradise (Český ráj), one of the most popular hiking and cycling areas in the Czech Republic. The Prachovské skály rock formations — dramatic sandstone towers — are about 20 kilometres east. Kost Castle, a well-preserved medieval fortress, is approximately 25 kilometres away and makes a natural pairing. The town of Turnov, 10 kilometres north, is a convenient base with restaurants and accommodation. The entire region is criss-crossed with marked hiking trails, and the landscape of wooded hills, sandstone outcrops, and castle ruins is exceptional for a day of walking.
